Where AI actually saves time in a services business, and where it doesn't yet
Aug 2026
Every services business is being pitched AI right now, and most of the pitches skip the part that actually matters: which parts of the work benefit, and which parts still need a person who understands the client.
Where it clearly works
Structured, repeatable work is where AI earns its keep fastest, first-pass drafts, triage, summarizing long threads into a decision someone can act on. The time saved there is real and it compounds, because it's time that was previously spent on work nobody enjoyed doing anyway.
Where it still needs a human in the loop
Anything involving judgment about a specific client relationship, negotiation, or reading a room still needs a person. AI can prepare the ground, but the accountability for the outcome should stay with someone who can be held to it.
The practical takeaway
Treat AI Employees as leverage for your team, not a replacement for judgment. The businesses getting real value are the ones that redesigned the workflow around what AI is actually good at, instead of bolting AI onto a workflow that was designed for people.
